DIY Floor Lamp
If there's one decor element that you cannot go wrong with, it's a floor lamp. It isn't just any other decor addition as it elevates your room's aesthetic appeal by accentuating the ceiling height. As secondary lighting, it adds more intricacy and drama to your room's ambiance. It doesn't fail to exceed expectations as a corner decor element as well.
In this post, I'll show you how you can make your own floor lamp without having to spend much. I assure you that you'll be amazed by the result you're going to get if you follow my DIY steps till the end.
1) Get Everything You Need For This Project
As I always do, I recommend getting ready with all the essentials first. From the list below, I recommend buying the items only if you don't have them at your home:
- Wooden skewers
- Two hoops
- Jute rope
- Glue gun
- A pair of scissors
- A bendable wire
- One electric bulb
- One bulb holder with electric cable connection
- PVC pipe measuring 140 cm long
- White cement
- Bucket-shaped plastic container
- Paint
2) Get The Base Of The Lampshade Ready
First, we're going to start by making the lampshade. The first step is to work on the structure of the lampshade. Take two hoops and wind jute rope around them.
After you're done, the two should look like these:
3) Give the lampshade a cylindrical shape
The next step is to give a cylindrical shape to the lampshade. Take wooden skewers and cut their pointed ends. Using a glue gun, glue both ends of the skewers to the two hoops. Also, make sure that the skewers have the same length.
The end result should look similar to this.
4) Make the base for the bulb holder
Take a bendable wire and bend it to a circle using the bulb holder as the guide.
As you did in step 2, wind jute rope around the circled wire.
Take wooden skewers, and chop off the pointed ends. Cut the skewers to the length of the lampshade structure's radius (half diameter). Use the glue gun to glue the skewers to the circled wire.
5) Attach the bulb holder base
The next step is to glue the outer ends of the bulb holder base skewer to one of the hoops of the lampshade structure. If the skewers stick out, make sure to trim them.
6) Work on the stand
For making the floor lamp's stand, you'll be using a PVC pipe that's 140 cm long. On end of the pipe, glue the bulb holder in a straight position.
7) Ready the base of the lampshade
Take a bucket-shaped plastic container and punch a hole at its lower side. Run the electric cable (connected with the bulb holder) from inside of the container through the hole outwards.
8) Join the stand and the base
After running the electric cable outwards of the base, place and hold the pipe in the middle.
The next step is to mix white cement with water. After preparing a thick consistency, fill the plastic container with the cement.
Leave the cement for 8 to 12 hours to harden. Once done, the hardened cement will support the stand.
9) Conceal the PVC pipe stand
Use jute rope to bind the PVC pipe stand of the floor lamp. Glue one end of the jute rope on top of the pipe (just below where the bulb holder is attached).
Bind the rope in a spiral pattern all the way down to the base end of the pipe.
Painting the jute rope binding really helps lend a sophisticated touch-up to the stand.
10) Get the final assembly done
The final step is to assemble the lampshade with the stand. Connect an LED bulb, plug it on, and voilà, you have your DIY floor lamp ready.
